12 Eylül 1980 darbesi öncesi belediyesi olan semtin belediyeliği ihtilal döneminde elinden alınmış ve Kartal'a ait bir semt haline getirilmiştir. 1992 yılında ise Maltepe'nin ilçe olması üzerine Maltepe'ye bağlanmıştır. İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi Küçükyalı Kampüsü, Maltepe Belediyesi Evlendirme Dairesi, General Kenan Evren Kışlası, Küçükyalı Askeri Lojmanları, İkmal Maliye Okulu ve Eğitim Merkezi Komutanlığına ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Türkiye'nin en çok market ve kuruyemişşilerin bulunduğu semtidir.
Küçükyalı'nın darbe yıllarında kapatılmadan önce 12 adet kullanılabilir plajı olduğu söylenmektedir. Günümüzdeyse plajların yerinde sahil yolu bulunmakta ve ulaşımda büyük rahatlık sağlamaktadır. Küçükyalı Su Kooperatifi de bu sahil yolu üzerindedir. Ayrıca Türk Telekom bölge müdürlüğü Küçükyalı da bulunmaktadır. Maltepe ilçesine ve Maltepe ilçesinin semtlerine Küçükyalı Telekom Müdürlüğü bakmaktadır. Tarihi yönden büyük bir önemi olan semtin bir adet de arkeolojik parkı bulunmaktadır.
Küçükyalı ayrıca merhum işadamı Kadir Has'ın en sevdiği semtlerden birisidir. Kadir Has burada birçok okul yaptırmıştır. Mezarı da Küçükyalı Mezarlığı'nda aile kabristanlığındadır.Also unhealthy for emergency
